Rewards for Justice is offering a reward of up to $3 million for information on Ahmed Iman Ali. Ali is a prominent commander of al-Shabaab, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), who has served as the group’s leader in Kenya since 2012. He directs the group’s anti-Kenyan operations, which have targeted Kenyan African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops in Somalia. One such attack in January 2016 in El Adde, Somalia, routed an entire garrison from a military base and left more than 140 Kenyan AMISOM troops dead.
Ali is also responsible for al-Shabaab propaganda targeting the Kenyan government and civilians, such as a July 2017 video in which he threatened Muslims serving in Kenya’s security forces. Ali has also served as an al-Shabaab recruiter, focusing on poor youth in Nairobi, and has raised funds at mosques to support al-Shabaab’s activities.
On March 8, 2018, the U.S. Department of State designated Ali as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended. As a result of this designation, among other consequences, all property and interests in property of Ali that are subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with Ali. In addition, it is a crime to knowingly provide, or attempt or conspire to provide material support or resources to the FTO al-Shabaab.
