Africa (Sub-sahara)

Rewards for Justice is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information on Abdelbasit Alhaj Alhassan Haj Hamad. Abdelbasit is wanted for his role as one of the gunmen in the murders of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) employees John Granville and Abdelrahman Abbas Rahama in Khartoum on January 1, 2008.

A Sudanese court tried, convicted, and sentenced Abdelbasit to death in 2009 for his involvement in the murders. However, Abdelbasit escaped from prison on June 10, 2010, before his sentence could be carried out. He remains at large and is believed to be in Somalia.

On January 8, 2013, the U.S. Department of State designated Abdelbasit as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended. As a result of this designation, among other consequences, all property, and interests in property, of Abdelbasit that are subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with Abdelbasit.
