Rewards for Justice is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information on Mohamed Makawi Ibrahim Mohamed. He was the leader of the attack that killed U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) employees John Granville and Abdelrahman Abbas Rahama in Khartoum on January 1, 2008. Makawi had ties to a group in Sudan called al-Qa’ida in the Land of the Two Niles, which had plotted to attack U.S., Western, and Sudanese interests.
A Sudanese court tried, convicted, and sentenced Makawi to death in 2009 for his involvement in the murders. However, Makawi escaped from prison on June 10, 2010, before his sentence could be carried out. He remains at large and is believed to be in Somalia.
On January 8, 2013, the U.S. Department of State designated Makawi as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended. As a result of this designation, among other consequences, all property, and interests in property, of Makawi that are subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with Makawi.
