Kidnapping of Ihsan Ashour

Baghdad, Iraq | December 2019

Rewards for Justice is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to those responsible for the December 13, 2019 abduction of U.S. citizen Ihsan Ashour in Baghdad.

Ashour, who holds dual U.S.-Iraqi citizenship, was in Iraq on personal matters. He was abducted by approximately 10 armed men in masks and black clothing in al-Sha’ab District, near Sadr City, during the mass demonstration in the capital’s Tahrir Square. His kidnappers choked, beat, and administered electrical shocks to his body before driving him across the border to Iran. Inside Iran, another group of captors interrogated Ashour about alleged espionage activities. After determining he was not a spy, his captors returned Ashour to Iraq, where he continued to be tortured and interrogated. He was released in May 2020, and he returned home to the United States.
